When to Start Lessons?

"Whenever one shows a talent at a very early age, as in my case, the feeling is that the music has chosen you."---Byron Janis
A Suitable Age
Most children are ready to begin formal training between the ages of four and six. Some children may be ready earlier and some should start later. There is no definitive answer.
It is essential that the parent not discourage their child from piano because they won't be "competitive" with children who started earlier than them. Similarly, they should not start at too young of an age if their attention span is not yet sufficient.
Each Child is Different
Even though children grow at about the same rate and behave similarly according to their age, each one has their own distinct personality. Therefore, the proper age to start piano lessons is different for everyone.
I have had students at age four that could have started a year earlier while students at age six should have waited another year. All indications of whether a child is ready for piano lessons are best assessed by the parent and a qualified music teacher.
Too Early or too Late?
First and foremost, a good music education starts at home on a daily basis. If there is an abundance of music at home, the child's enthusiasm will naturally indicate the right time to begin lessons.
"Although I had begun to study the piano at age six, as time went on I composed, I painted, I read avidly and, of course, wrote poetry." ---Alfred Brendel
